Ghana is the most favourable West African entry point right now. From 1 October 2026 the used-vehicle age limit widens from 10 to 15 years, which brings a far wider band of Chinese stock into scope at the same moment the region’s other markets are tightening.

Ghana Standards Authority rules apply by shipment date: vehicles shipped on or after 1 October 2026 need inspection in the country of origin by a GSA-approved body and a Certificate of Conformance before the ship sails, and importers must register with the GSA Vehicle Homologation Unit. The prohibition starts above 15 years and is separate from customs’ own overage penalty, which begins above 10 years and reaches 20% of CIF between 12 and 15 years. Flood or fire damaged vehicles, units assembled from spare parts, speedometers that cannot read km/h and vehicles with a bent chassis or safety cage are refused outright.
Tema takes RoRo at volume and its vehicle terminal is the most practised in the region; Takoradi is the alternative for the western corridor. Consolidating several units into one 40ft container keeps the per-unit freight down on this lane.
- From 1 October 2026 the shipment date decides which rules apply: vehicles shipped before that date stay under the old regime even if they arrive later.
- Covered vehicles need inspection in the country of origin by a GSA-approved body and a Certificate of Conformance before shipment, and importers must register with the GSA Vehicle Homologation Unit.
- Prohibited outright: flood or fire damaged vehicles, vehicles assembled from spare parts, speedometers that cannot show km/h, and vehicles with a bent or cracked chassis or safety cage.
- The 20% overage band is the single largest avoidable line in a Ghana landed cost — a unit at 10 years and 11 months clears far cheaper than the same unit after its twelfth birthday.
