The rules that decide the deal
Ghana Standards Authority rules apply by shipment date: vehicles shipped on or after 1 October 2026 need inspection in the country of origin by a GSA-approved body and a Certificate of Conformance before the ship sails, and importers must register with the GSA Vehicle Homologation Unit. The prohibition starts above 15 years and is separate from customs’ own overage penalty, which begins above 10 years and reaches 20% of CIF between 12 and 15 years. Flood or fire damaged vehicles, units assembled from spare parts, speedometers that cannot read km/h and vehicles with a bent chassis or safety cage are refused outright.
Tema takes RoRo at volume and its vehicle terminal is the most practised in the region; Takoradi is the alternative for the western corridor. Consolidating several units into one 40ft container keeps the per-unit freight down on this lane.
