How to verify a used car from China before it ships

Verification is four checks on one specific car: the VIN on the chassis matches the invoice and the documents, the photographs and video are of that car rather than a stock image, the odometer and fault codes were read and recorded, and the paperwork matches the destination rules. Anything less describes a model, not a car.

A description of a model is not a car

A listing tells you what a 2021 saloon with 40,000 km is normally like. It does not tell you what the car behind your quote is like. The gap between those two things is where most of the risk in this trade sits, and it is closed by evidence about one unit rather than by a better description.

Everything below can be produced before loading. None of it requires you to be in China.

The five checks

CheckWhat it proves
VIN, chassis and engine number match the invoice and the documentsThe car you were shown is the car being exported, and the file will survive customs
Photographs of that unit: four sides, interior, dashboard with the odometer, engine bay, underbodyCondition, trim, colour and mileage are what was described rather than what was hoped for
Video walkaround with a cold start and the engine runningNo fault masked by an engine that was already warm when the camera arrived
Odometer reading and stored fault codes recorded at inspectionThe mileage is dated rather than asserted, and warnings are known before the car sails
Service, accident and registration history where the market publishes itThe unit is not a repaired insurance write-off being sold as an ordinary used car

What the video has to show

Video is the part buyers underuse, and it is the cheapest evidence available. Ask for it in one continuous take with the VIN visible, so the recording cannot be assembled from different cars.

  • A cold start, with the dashboard lit before the engine catches, and the odometer visible in the same frame.
  • The VIN plate or stamp, filmed in the same take as the exterior.
  • All four sides and each corner, close enough to see paint and panel gaps.
  • The interior: seats, dashboard, trim, and the wear on the driver’s contact points — wheel, pedals, gear lever.
  • The engine bay and the underbody, ideally on a ramp, which is where rust and repaired structure show.

Checking the paperwork against the destination

Documents are verified in the other direction as well: the set has to match the country the car is going to, and the numbers on the pages have to agree with each other. A VIN that matches across the invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading is what lets the file clear without an inspection hold.

Declared value deserves a word of its own. Destination customs assess the car on their own valuation, so an invoice written well below the market does not reduce the duty — it simply invites the uplift, and the delay that comes with it.

Red flags in the unit itself

  • Photographs with the number plate blurred or removed, where the destination does not require it.
  • An odometer reading that is much lower than the wear on the pedals and the driver’s seat.
  • A refusal to film the underbody, or an inspection “report” that is a form with no photographs attached.
  • A VIN that appears on no document except the advertisement.
  • A model year that has been adjusted to squeeze under an age cap — the first thing a destination inspector checks.

What verification cannot do

An inspection is not a warranty. It records the condition of a used car on a particular day, and a five-year-old vehicle will still have five-year-old consumables. What good verification does is remove the two outcomes that actually hurt: paying for one car and receiving another, and discovering a structural problem after the freight is spent.

For anything expensive or unfamiliar, a third-party inspection in China is available and cheap relative to the risk. If a seller resists one on a unit they are simultaneously trying to sell you, that is itself the answer.

Questions this guide answers

How do I know I am not buying a repaired write-off?
Ask for the underbody on a ramp, the panel gaps and paint on each side, and the service and insurance history where the market publishes it. A repaired structure usually shows in the underbody and in inconsistent panel alignment rather than in a cosmetic photograph.
Is a video walkaround enough to buy from?
A single continuous take with a cold start, the odometer, the VIN and the underbody is strong evidence about condition. It is not a mechanical guarantee. For a high-value unit, pair it with a third-party inspection in China before the balance is paid.
Can I send my own inspector in China?
Yes, and exporters work with third-party inspection companies routinely. The inspection is arranged on the specific unit before purchase, and the report goes to you directly rather than through the seller.
Does a VIN check work on a Chinese car?
A Chinese VIN identifies the manufacturer and the vehicle and appears on the export documents, so it can be matched across the invoice, the bill of lading and the conformity certificate — which is the comparison that matters for an export. It is not the same as a western accident-history database, which mostly does not cover Chinese domestic records.
