Used vehicles carry a hard 12-year age cap, assessed at the port on arrival (some clearing agents still work to a 10-year reading, so the year is confirmed before payment). SONCAP certification is mandatory and is issued in China before loading rather than at the port, which keeps it a sourcing cost. Customs assesses on its own accepted value rather than the invoice, so a cheap auction price does not automatically produce a cheap duty bill.

Units land at Apapa or Tin Can Island, both of which handle RoRo as well as containers. RoRo suits single units and small groups; a 40ft container carries two to four cars and is usually cheaper per unit once you have enough volume to fill it.

  • Duty plus levy on a used vehicle works out at roughly a quarter of CIF before VAT; the surcharge, ETLS and CISS lines add the rest.
  • SONCAP certification is issued in China before loading, so it is a sourcing cost rather than a port cost.
  • Engine size affects the Green Tax band, so a 2.0L unit costs more to clear than a 1.5L at identical CIF.
