How to import a car from China, step by step

Importing a car from China takes four things: a market where the car may legally be registered, a unit inside that country’s age limit, a conformity certificate issued in China before loading, and a sailing. From confirmed order to arrival, expect six to eight weeks, with most of the waiting in certification and in the next available vessel.

Start with the destination, not the car

Almost every failed import we see was decided the wrong way round: a car was bought because the price looked good, and the destination rules were checked afterwards. Two rules come first, and neither can be negotiated.

The drive side is absolute. China builds left-hand-drive cars, so a country that drives on the left cannot register one at all, at any price. The age limit is the second gate: it is a hard prohibition in some markets and a sliding penalty in others.

The six steps, in order

Each step has to finish before the next one starts. Doing them out of order is what turns a four-week job into a two-month one.

  • 1. Confirm the destination will accept the vehicle — drive side, age limit, and whether used imports are open at all.
  • 2. Choose the unit against a year-specific brief rather than a price. In markets with a hard cap, a car one year over the line is worth nothing.
  • 3. Verify it. Photos and video of the actual car — exterior, interior, engine bay, odometer, underbody — tied to the VIN on the invoice.
  • 4. Certify it before the ship sails. SONCAP, GSA, SABER, GCC conformity or a COC, depending on destination. None of these can be obtained after arrival.
  • 5. Ship it. RoRo for a single unit, a 40ft container for two to four cars once the volume justifies it.
  • 6. Clear and register. Customs first, then plates and any technical inspection, which is a separate process with separate fees.

What actually goes wrong

These five failure modes account for most of the money lost on this trade, and all five are avoidable at the point of order rather than at the port.

  • Certification requested after loading, so the car sits at the destination while paperwork is chased from China.
  • A unit bought just inside a weight or price band and just outside an age band, where the penalty or the prohibition bites on arrival.
  • A declared value well below the market, which customs uplifts to its own assessment — the saving is smaller than the delay.
  • A container shipped half full because the second unit fell through, so the freight per car doubles.
  • An inland leg that was never priced: Mali, Niger, Chad, Bolivia and the Central African Republic are decided by the truck, not the ship.

Typical timeline

These are working figures rather than promises; certification cycles and sailing schedules move.

Inspection and documentation3–7 days
Conformity certificate (destination dependent)3–14 days

One car, or a container?

RoRo is the right answer for a first order or a single unit: the car is driven aboard, secured and driven off, and there is no box to fill. The trade-offs are a thinner sailing schedule and a vehicle exposed on deck.

Once you are moving three or four cars to the same port, a 40ft container is normally cheaper per unit and the cars travel sealed and protected. That is the point at which most of our West African buyers switch.

Questions this guide answers

How long does it take to import a car from China?
Six to eight weeks door to port in most cases. The sea leg is only part of it: certification and the next available sailing usually account for two to three weeks of the total.
Can I import a single car, or do I need a container?
A single car is normal and is shipped RoRo. Containers become cheaper per vehicle at around three units to the same port.
Do I need a company to import a car?
It varies by market. Nigeria, Ghana, Iraq and most West African destinations expect a registered importer or dealer for commercial volumes; some markets allow personal imports under a personal-use quota, such as Algeria. Registration requirements at the destination decide it, so confirm before ordering.
How much deposit is normal?
A deposit confirms the unit and starts inspection and certification; the balance is settled before loading, against the inspection video and documents. Markets without a working banking channel — Yemen, Libya, Syria — run on payment in advance.
